Cambodian families in Montpellier
There are about forty Cambodian families living and working in Montpellier. They are very kind and warm-hearted. Cambodian students, who have been coming to Montpellier for the pursuit of their studies since 1990s, always receive the helps from the families when needed in order to alleviate the difficulties upon arrivals as well as during the stay in Montpellier. Thanks to the interwoven relationships, it gives the impression on the students' mind as if they are living in their own country.
Creation of the group ECaM
The numbers of Cambodian students vary from year to year. The staying period can goes from a few months to a few year depending on the study/internship program from which the students get benefit. Between 2007 and 2008, there had been around a dozen of Cambodian students in Montpellier and the very first idea of creating Cambodian student association of Montpellier came up. The preparation steps for establishing the group was initiated starting with the creation of the group status and the group blog which is later evolved into our current blog. Further activities were postoned due to the returning of some students in the end of 2009 after their graduations. It was until October 2010 that the first representative of Cambodian students in Montpellier was nominated and appointed coincidentally with the election of the new president of the Association of Cambodian people in Montpellier (ACM) during the Pchum Ben festival. Two years later, the idea for officially creating the association of Cambodian students was debated within the student group, and the majority of the students (>70%) voted for the creation of an non-official group against the official counterpart. It was then that the group ECaM found its proper status, well-defined structure, and clear-cut visions and goals.
