Useful Information

STAY IN MONTPELLIER
Montpellier is a student city, which displays all structures necessary for accommodating students. There is a wide range of lodging possibilities (Cités/résidences universitaires managed by CROUS, student residences owned by universities or institutes and private residences). However, the number of housing units is limited, especially when you want to get a suitable one with reasonable price. It is recommended to start your housing search process as soon as possible since the date of your application would be served as one of the priorities by CROUS, universities and institutes.

+ CROUS residence
CROUS is a public establishment under the supervision of CNOUS (Centre National des Œuvres Universitaires et Scolaires) and Ministry of higher Education and scientific Research. Its mission is to improve the living conditions of students.

The CU (Cités Universitaires) managed by CROUS display generally an access control, an intercom, a night watchman, workrooms, computer rooms with internet access, laundry, library and sports facilities as well as a parking. All CU provide the rooms with internet access, except the CU des Arceaux. The RU (Résidences Universitaires) provide furnished and equipped rooms with larger space (type T1, T1 bis or T2), but some services such as internet access and electricity fee are not included. It would be thus necessary to solicit a subscription to EDF and to internet/telephone operator.

There are 4 types of housing in CU with at least a bed, a desk, chairs and a cupboard:
  • A Single room: collective kitchen and bathroom with rental fee 143 euros per month.
  • A Single room plus: collective kitchen and bathroom, new furniture, refrigerator and in building access control with rental fee 166 euros per month.
  • A Room with comfortable toilet block: shower, washbasin, toilet, new furniture, refrigerator, in building access control with rental fee 231 euros per month.
  • A studio: bathroom, kitchen, new furniture, refrigerator, in building access control with rental fee from 254 euros per month.
There are six CU located all around Montpellier. This could respond to your specific requirements (near downtown Montpellier, tram station or university). You can  click on the name of each below CU for further information:
1.    C.U. des Arceaux
2.    C.U. Vert-Bois
3.    C.U. Boutonnet
4.    C.U. Triolet

If you want to stay in CROUS’s CU, you must make a reservation request before coming to Montpellier even if your document required by CROUS is not complete. You have to mark your preference regarding the room of all CU on the application form available in the CROUS’s website. For greatest comfort, it is recommended to get studio in a CU, even though it is more expensive. Note that you would get support of 20-40% of the rental fee from CAF (Caisse d’Allocation Familiale). CROUS will study your case and classify its priority according to the date of your application and other criterions (priority is given to BFG fellow students). When a room is available, CROUS will issue an attestation telling you which CU you are going to lodge.

If you are a BGF fellow student, you can just write an email to CROUS to book a room/studio. Once you arrive in Montpellier, you can go directly to CROUS and you will get your room/studio just in the same day.

RESIDENCE PERMIT AND OFFICE FRANÇAIS DE L'IMMIGRATION ET DE L'INTÉGRATION (OFII)
Since June 2009, all foreign people who have settled in France with visas ("visa de long séjour or titre de séjour") for more than three months are exempt from requesting temporary residence permit for the first year of their stay in France.

If you are a student and you have this new type of visa made by French Embassy in Cambodia, you will still need to contact the Office Français de l’Immigration et de l’Intégration (OFII) upon your arrival to take a medical check and have your visa approved as a residence permit. A sticker will be then affixed by OFII on your passport. You will have to pay a tax of €58 by purchasing an OMI stamp (or an ANAEM stamp) at Tobacco shop or online purchasing www.timbresofii.fr .

NOTE:
  • The OFII’s sticker is an official document required for applying to Préfecture de Montpellier for a   “titre de séjour” (residence permit) for your second year of stay. It is also necessary for other administrative approaches such as rent subsidy application to CAF
  •       If you have another student visa or a visa “concours études” Please don't send any document to OFII. Alternatively, you need to apply directly to Préfecture de Montpellier for a “titre de séjour” upon your arrival.
